Wood Floor Water Damage Repair & Restoration
Water and wood flooring don’t mix well. Even the smallest of spills can cause permanent water damage to wood floors if left untreated. The water not only damages the wood panels themselves but also the layer of subflooring below. It can cause a range of issues, including uneven surfaces, discoloration, and mold growth.
Take a look below at the top causes of water damage and how to spot them so you can nip this problem in the bud as soon as possible after the damage has occurred.
Top 3 Causes of Floor Water Damage
While you may want to stop water damage before it occurs, it’s not always preventable. After all, accidents are bound to happen. However, it doesn’t hurt to keep an eye out for the top three causes of water damage.
Find The Source
The leading cause of water damage to wood floors is leaking pipes. Common causes for leaking pipes include tree roots and frozen water. Tree roots can grow tightly around a pipe underground, squeezing enough that it breaks through the exterior.
When the outdoor temperature drops below freezing, the water in your pipes is likely to freeze. Since water expands when it freezes, it causes the pipe’s interior to stretch so much that it forms cracks and holes. When the temperature rises again and the frozen water melts, it escapes through any cracks and holes that formed during the freezing process.
Leaking Appliances
Household appliances that use water can also cause water damage. When you overfill your washing machine or your dishwasher malfunctions, the damage can be extensive.
Storm Flooding
Everything from thunderstorms and excess rain can cause water damage to your floors. All you can do in these situations is take proper precautions and stormproof your home as much as possible.

How to Spot Hardwood Floor Water Damage
How to Detect Water Damage
Now you know what causes water damage, but how do you know when it has occurred? Look for these three telltale signs:
- Discoloration: Water often creates dark or faded patches on the wood flooring. Mold growth can also play a part in this process.
- Rising panels: Since wood is porous, wood floors absorb water when they get wet. The absorbed water loosens the panels, causing them to swell and lift out of place.
- Cracked wood: Excess moisture causes individual wood panels to form cracks across the surface.
To Replace or Repair Hardwood Floor Water Damage Spot?
The first question you must ask yourself after detecting water damage on wood floors is whether to repair or replace them. The answer to this question depends on how much flooring is damaged and to what extent.
If the damage is relatively minor and hasn’t impacted the subflooring, repairs should get the job done. Repairs can also suffice for water damage that only affects a small section of flooring.
On the other hand, water damage can leave wood flooring unsalvageable. Excess water exposure can seep into the subflooring, and untreated water damage can cause mold growth that poses health risks. And just because you can repair the flooring doesn’t mean you should. A total replacement might end up being a better long-term investment.
The 5 Types of Water Damage to Hardwood Floors
Below is a list of the top five issues caused by water damage to hardwood floors:
- Cupping: Cupping occurs when excess moisture causes the edges of each wood panel to rise above the center portion, creating an uneven surface.
- Crowning: Crowning occurs when excess moisture causes the center of each wood panel to swell above the edges, creating an uneven surface.
- Buckling: Buckling occurs when excess moisture causes the wood panels to separate from the subfloor underneath.
- Splits and cracking: Rather than rising evenly and separating from the subfloor, the wood panel forms several cracks across the surface. Wood panels that form splits or cracks must be replaced because the wood is left unprotected.
- Gapping: Unlike the above issues, gapping is caused by moisture insufficiency rather than excess moisture. The lack of moisture causes the panels to shrink and form gaps on either side. Thankfully, the panels will return to normal when the humidity level stabilizes. Gapping is a relatively minor issue and doesn’t always necessitate repairs or a replacement.

Roman did a great job inspecting our crawl space after we had a leak from the kitchen sink drain connection to the sewer pipe in the foundation. (BTW, he needs a raise, too!) Thanks, Roman!Posted on Brittany AllenTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I am beyond happy and satisfied with the amazing work the Pure Dry team did for our family. Waking up to a water loss in your home is something no homeowner ever wants to experience, but Pure Dry made an incredibly stressful situation feel manageable from start to finish. Every single person who came into our home or spoke with us on the phone was kind, knowledgeable, accountable, attentive, empathetic, and genuinely cared about what we were going through. Nathan Kelly’s team, including Levi, Garrett, Miguel, and everyone else involved, was absolutely outstanding. Each person was professional, communicative, and always on top of their responsibilities. I was amazed at how quickly they responded and how efficiently they worked. They were able to dry out our home within just a few days while minimizing disruption to our daily lives. They also worked diligently with both insurance companies, helped navigate the claims process, advocated for us, and coordinated the reconstruction process so everything could move forward smoothly. What could have been a complete disaster turned into a surprisingly positive experience because of the Pure Dry team. Their expertise, customer service, and attention to detail exceeded every expectation we had. We are incredibly grateful for how quickly and professionally they handled everything. If you ever find yourself dealing with water damage, I cannot recommend Pure Dry highly enough. They truly turned one of the most stressful situations a homeowner can face into a smooth and well-managed process.Posted on Melinda CoxTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I can say plenty of wonderful ways the PureDry Restoration has gone above and beyond to help my parents with water damage from an overflowed toilet tank. Shaun came over late and was patient with explaining his findings, what needed to be done and the plan to dry out the 2 floor, multiroom water damage. His patience and genuine care really touched us during this difficult situation and a family emergency. His team was very professional with set up, checking the moisture and take down. Ashlynn and Kirstie are also amazing people! Ashlynn is so knowledgeable with the transition from damage to rebuild process, took the time to explain her findings and next steps. Kirstie has been ever so patient with my parents. Going over decisions, bringing over samples, pros/cons and working with additional changes for upgrading the bathrooms. She finds different ways to explain and brainstorm when work will be done so my parents will be out of the house less time. Overall PureDry has been more than professional, their team members invest the time to hear more than the customers choices but listen to the reasoning and come up with solutions with the customers. I would highly recommend them and use their services in the future.Posted on Robert & Carolyn HowsonTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We are very pleased with PureDry and our project manager, Shaun. This team, from start to finish, treated our home with a thorough clean-up and drying out in preparation for restoration of two bathrooms. Shaun and Joshua were present when the insurance adjuster came to help mitigate that phase as we go forward toward restoration. We appreciate the support at a challenging time.Posted on KANWARDEEP BARIANATrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Great job from start to finish. The project was completed on time, and the quality of work was excellent. The project manager was very professional, responsive, and handled all of our questions and concerns efficiently. We are very satisfied with the results and would gladly recommend their services to others.Posted on David DeanTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Every step of the process they explained to me what they were doing, we’re on time with scheduled appointments and we’re professional. The final coat matched the estimate.Posted on Kay PappasTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Project Manager Michael Medeiros came over to inspect our crawl space for mold, on the recommendation of the plumbing company team who came out due to our recent wet basement. He was friendly, professional, knowledgeable, and very thorough. We were surprised to discover that our crawl space, now that it’s dry, is actually in good condition and needs no further work at this time. We trust his judgment and appreciate his honesty and integrity, and, wholeheartedly and unhesitatingly, respectfully recommend him to anyone else who might be in need of a crawl space inspector. Thank you, Michael, for your work and for your courtesy!Posted on SpencerTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. These guys are great! Amari and Luis came out to do a moisture reading after a water situation in our house. Very thorough with their inspection and did a complementary mold/fresh spray into vents and areas where water traveled.Posted on John DoolittleTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We noticed that our hardwood floors were buckling. Finding leaking water in the crawlspace we called a plumber who traced the leak to a burst hot water pipe and repaired it. The damage, mainly soaked drywall, insulation and sub-floors, extended to the crawlspace and three rooms. PureDry did a fantastic job, coming up with a comprehensive plan and conducting demolition and dry out services over ten days. I cannot adequately thank PureDry’s Project Manager, Shaun Smith. He walked us through the entire process, explaining things clearly and making spot on suggestions. He also handled what should have been a straightforward insurance claim. This was denied by Liberty Mutual. They did not send out field adjuster, instead relying on photos reviewed by someone in Florida. For almost two weeks, Shaun fought tirelessly on our behalf. Likely unsuccessfully, though I do have a complaint into the WA Insurance Commissioner’s Office. Shout outs to Paul, Garret and Kevin for excellent demo and dry out services. A special thanks to Kevin for providing an expert’s statement to the insurance company to support our case. This company provided honest and efficient service, then went above and beyond to support us in our battle with our soon to be ex insurance company. We got great value for our money and did not hesitate to hire PureDry for a follow on reconstruction contract. Great job gentlemen ________________________________________________________________ May 19th, 2026 This is an addendum to my review of PureDry Restoration Services. The long journey is at the end. PureDry finished their mitigation and restoration work within a month. However, my insurance company fought any sort of recompense tooth and nail at every step of the way and is just now making payment. We have been a home owners since 1992 and paid our premiums on time every year. This was our first claim against our homeowner’s insurance company. In addition to the excellent mitigation and restoration work performed by PureDry and their subcontractors, PureDry worked tenaciously to ensure that my insurance company would hold up their end of the contract. Now, nearly two months after the restoration work was completed, the insurance company has provided nearly 80% of the cost of the work. I can accept some reasonable depreciation, etc. but this is a big step up from the ZERO DOLLARS the company originally said we were entitled to. I credit this change of heart to the pressure put on the company, first by PureDry’s mitigation manager Shaun Smith, and especially by Chelsi May, PureDry’s Accounts Receivable Specialist. Ms. May essentially held our hands throughout the insurance battle, providing both technical data and legal realities somehow overlooked by the insurance company. Chelsi was unrelenting and eventually got the situation resolved. This was long after PureDry had finished their work and was above and beyond what anyone could expect from a restoration company employee. My wife and I are very grateful to Shaun and Chelsi, exemplary employees at a fine company. Thank you! The project manager Shaun Smith was awesome to work with very professional and very personable with the homeowner made them feel more like family then a job.
