Water Leaking From Ceilings
Water leaks in the ceiling are more common than they should be, and there are a couple of causes that are typically behind them.
Leaking Pipes
If the pipes above your ceiling are leaking, this could cause water damage to it. The pipes that are typically guilty of this are drainage pipes and supply pipes to your sinks or washing machine.
Damaged Roof
If the shingles on your roof are damaged, raised, or missing, this can cause water to infiltrate your house and cause water damage to your ceiling.
Extreme Weather
Extreme weather can include a variety of natural disasters. Some, like hurricanes or storms, can cause flooding in your home in the blink of an eye, which can easily result in water damage.
If you are subjected to extreme weather, even if it’s just a typical summer thunderstorm, it’s important to get ahead of any possible water damage and search for any indications of standing water or leaks in your home.
Clogged Gutters
Clogged gutters aren’t generally the first culprit that you’d think of when it comes to ceiling leaks, but it’s a common occurrence.
When your gutters become clogged with leaves, twigs, or ice, they can’t direct the water that pools inside away from the house properly. This means that they overflow and spill over toward the house, instead. which can cause water damage inside.

How to Fix Water Damage in Ceilings
Find the Source of the Leak
Finding the source of the leak is the first and one of the most important steps in fixing the water damage on ceiling. After all, if you don’t find and fix the leak at its source, then the water damage will just keep coming back and causing more destruction. There are a couple of things you can do to help you stay safe and find the source more easily:
- Take note that if your kitchen, bathroom, or laundry room has water droplets on the ceiling, it may be because it’s poorly ventilated
- Place a bucket or tarp under an active leak to contain the water and clear the area of furniture
- Water can leak into light fixtures, so turn off the breaker box and be extremely careful if any electrical wiring is involved
- If a stain or drip area is visible on the ceiling, use a pencil to draw an outline of it to pinpoint the center, which is typically where the source of the leak will be
- If you are having trouble finding the source, you can use a moisture meter by placing it against a flat surface and taking readings to see which area has the highest moisture levels
Fix the Leak
Once the leak is found, the water supply to the area will need to be shut off before you can continue. The way to fix the leak will depend heavily on the source. Leaks in plumbing are usually caused by:
- Worn caulk
- Rust
- Bursts from temperature changes
- Loose pipes or pipe fittings
If the leak is in the bathroom or kitchen, some of the common sources that would need to be fixed are:
- Broken toilet bowls
- Faulty shower doors
- Failing caulk around bathtubs or showers
- Faulty water supply lines for sinks or appliances
- Damaged P-trap drains
Fix the Leak
After the source is fixed, you can move on to repairing the water damage. The types of repairs will vary depending on the type and extent of the water damage. However, no matter what kind of damage it is, it’s essential to dry out the area first and get rid of any mold or mildew. High-powered blower fans or dehumidifiers may be necessary to ensure that all of the moisture is removed. If the damage is simply discoloration on the ceiling, then all that needs to be done is some repainting. For larger areas of water damage, it becomes more complicated. You will need to:
- Remove all damaged material, like insulation or drywall
- Cut back the drywall to the closest joists to attach a replacement sheet
- Cut a sheet of drywall to cover the gap, being careful that it matches the thickness of the original drywall
- Lift the drywall into place
- Attach the drywall to the ceiling with a drill and drywall screws
- Prime and paint the ceiling
Repairing water damage on your own can be unsafe, costly, and require training that you may not have. It’s always best to call an experienced professional to take care of it for you when you first see the signs of water damage on your ceiling.
Posted on Corey LaufasaTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I have no words- (but have a lot of words! ) for how I feel about the team as a WHOLE at Pure dry! I met Nathan years and years ago with a water claim, he made such an impact that I knew who to call in this disaster. After experiencing such a stressful and overwhelming evening of water, I cannot say enough amazing things about Pure Dry and their entire team! From the very first phone call, I was treated with kindness, patience, and genuine compassion during a time when I truly needed a little extra hand-holding navigating the process, since I was running solo as a fire wife and momma. Roman especially deserves so much recognition. He showed me a level of empathy and care that went far beyond what I expected. He took the time to explain things insurance maybe wouldn’t, answered every question with patience, and made me feel supported INSTEAD of overwhelmed. There were moments I felt completely emotionally flooded (no pun intended!), and he met me with calm reassurance, kindness, and walked me through parts of the process that felt uncertain. That human kindness within that moment mattered more than I can explain. Just two days later, I was left in the incredibly capable hands of Miguel and Ryan for the full mitigation. They were absolutely fantastic, professional, respectful and hardworking, not to mention reassuring every step of the way. You can tell this team truly cares about people, not just the job itself. When your home and routine feel upside down, having a company like Pure Dry in your corner is priceless. They brought calm into chaos, and I’ll always be grateful for the care they showed my family.Posted on Vincent TamTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I had two small patches of mold on my garage ceiling caused by a bathtub overflow leak. I called PureDry Restoration, and their team arrived within 36 hours (they offered to come sooner, but I had prior commitments). Shaun and his team thoroughly inspected the garage drywall and the upstairs bathroom, confirming there was no active leak. Ultimately, they told me the project was small enough for me to handle safely on my own and even gave me pointers on how to do it. PureDry Restoration is incredibly honest; they didn’t try to upsell me or use scare tactics to pressure me into a contract. We need more contractors like them! Highly recommendedPosted on Julia KellyTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Rhiannon did a great job coordinating all the water damage related reconstruction at our house after a major plumbing water leak damaged a wall and floors. This was a very stressful time for us, but it was so helpful to have someone always available to answer questions and quickly schedule the reconstruction work after the dry out was complete. Highly recommend.Posted on Linda MangoneTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. The employees of PureDry did a wonderful job locating and fixing a leak in our dining room. We were kept informed about the process along the way. After calling more than one service company, we were impressed with Michael Medeiros assessment of the issue and the bid. Another staffer, Roman, was particularly helpful in locating the tricky leak and assisting others in how to fix the leak. Dorian faithfully serviced the drying out process, along with other staff (Skylar and Garret). We were very pleased with the mitigation work. Thank you!Posted on Stephanie JonesTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Shaun and Roman were super helpful and knowledgeable. If you have any water or mold problems I would highly recommend them.Posted on APTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I had a great experience with Chris from PureDry. He was very professional and did a thorough job checking both the bathroom and the attic. He used moisture meters to verify the current conditions and even took the time to go into the attic to confirm there were no issues with the roof or venting. I really appreciated his clear communication and the high-tech approach to the inspection!Posted on Toni McQueenTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. My first contact with PureDry Restoration was with Daryl (Mitigation Project Manager). He walked me through the process of restoring my floorings which were destroyed due to a toilet flooding. It affected the bathroom, living room, dining room and spare bedroom. He was thorough and patient with all my concerns and questions. He even returned my phone call after business hours later in the evening! Brayden, William, Skyler and Garrett were my Mitigation Technicians. They set up fans EVERYWHERE, even under my crawlspace to ensure everything was completely dry. Luckily, I was away for a few days and didn’t have to deal with the noise. The team showed up the day after I returned and removed all the fans and cleaned up the area. Max (Estimator/Insurance Advocate) was unbelievable! He is the MASTER on Washington laws/rules, never backing down, and worked diligently to ensure my insurance company paid out fairly. Leah (Project Coordinator) was also one of the first people I worked with, and she was on top of it all, right up to the last detail. Ashlynn (Project Director & Sales) did the inspection to determine damage. She was incredibly thorough and an absolute pleasure to work with. She continually followed up on the project and provided recommendations when asked. Mykal & Alejandro (Onsite Foreman) finalized the installation of new bathroom countertop, flooring transition trim and touchup painting. A big shoutout to Vasiliy and Yuri on the LVP flooring. Yuri stayed until 7pm both nights to finish up the flooring which turned out beautifully! And, finally, Rhiannon (Project Manager). She was diligent, on track, professional and a little bit of a therapist! This was a stressful experience for me and she was always there to answer questions, provide status and calm me down!! I am incredibly grateful. I’ve never had this experience before and am so pleased that I hired PureDry Restoration. The team was phenomenal from beginning to end. Great communication, professional and friendly. I highly recommend them for your Restoration projects.Posted on StanTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. As a new homeowner I was super apprehensive when I found some water damage but Michael Medeiros from PureDry was super helpful and recommended the best (and least costly) course of action. Michael also took the time to check out the rest of the house and answered all my questions. He recommended a few things I would never have noticed or thought about. Super thanks for the inspection (free!) and putting my mind at ease Michael!Verified by TrustindexTrustindex verified badge is the Universal Symbol of Trust.
