Water Leaking From Ceilings
Water leaks in the ceiling are more common than they should be, and there are a couple of causes that are typically behind them.
Leaking Pipes
If the pipes above your ceiling are leaking, this could cause water damage to it. The pipes that are typically guilty of this are drainage pipes and supply pipes to your sinks or washing machine.
Damaged Roof
If the shingles on your roof are damaged, raised, or missing, this can cause water to infiltrate your house and cause water damage to your ceiling.
Extreme Weather
Extreme weather can include a variety of natural disasters. Some, like hurricanes or storms, can cause flooding in your home in the blink of an eye, which can easily result in water damage.
If you are subjected to extreme weather, even if it’s just a typical summer thunderstorm, it’s important to get ahead of any possible water damage and search for any indications of standing water or leaks in your home.
Clogged Gutters
Clogged gutters aren’t generally the first culprit that you’d think of when it comes to ceiling leaks, but it’s a common occurrence.
When your gutters become clogged with leaves, twigs, or ice, they can’t direct the water that pools inside away from the house properly. This means that they overflow and spill over toward the house, instead. which can cause water damage inside.

How to Fix Water Damage in Ceilings
Find the Source of the Leak
Finding the source of the leak is the first and one of the most important steps in fixing the water damage on ceiling. After all, if you don’t find and fix the leak at its source, then the water damage will just keep coming back and causing more destruction. There are a couple of things you can do to help you stay safe and find the source more easily:
- Take note that if your kitchen, bathroom, or laundry room has water droplets on the ceiling, it may be because it’s poorly ventilated
- Place a bucket or tarp under an active leak to contain the water and clear the area of furniture
- Water can leak into light fixtures, so turn off the breaker box and be extremely careful if any electrical wiring is involved
- If a stain or drip area is visible on the ceiling, use a pencil to draw an outline of it to pinpoint the center, which is typically where the source of the leak will be
- If you are having trouble finding the source, you can use a moisture meter by placing it against a flat surface and taking readings to see which area has the highest moisture levels
Fix the Leak
Once the leak is found, the water supply to the area will need to be shut off before you can continue. The way to fix the leak will depend heavily on the source. Leaks in plumbing are usually caused by:
- Worn caulk
- Rust
- Bursts from temperature changes
- Loose pipes or pipe fittings
If the leak is in the bathroom or kitchen, some of the common sources that would need to be fixed are:
- Broken toilet bowls
- Faulty shower doors
- Failing caulk around bathtubs or showers
- Faulty water supply lines for sinks or appliances
- Damaged P-trap drains
Fix the Leak
After the source is fixed, you can move on to repairing the water damage. The types of repairs will vary depending on the type and extent of the water damage. However, no matter what kind of damage it is, it’s essential to dry out the area first and get rid of any mold or mildew. High-powered blower fans or dehumidifiers may be necessary to ensure that all of the moisture is removed. If the damage is simply discoloration on the ceiling, then all that needs to be done is some repainting. For larger areas of water damage, it becomes more complicated. You will need to:
- Remove all damaged material, like insulation or drywall
- Cut back the drywall to the closest joists to attach a replacement sheet
- Cut a sheet of drywall to cover the gap, being careful that it matches the thickness of the original drywall
- Lift the drywall into place
- Attach the drywall to the ceiling with a drill and drywall screws
- Prime and paint the ceiling
Repairing water damage on your own can be unsafe, costly, and require training that you may not have. It’s always best to call an experienced professional to take care of it for you when you first see the signs of water damage on your ceiling.
EXCELLENTBased on 406 reviewsTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.Bad Dog2024-08-21My wife called into PureDry and was connected with Michaela (hopefully I spelled that correctly) - it was a great experience. We described our issue, and Michaela was able to navigate us through the process and get us set up with a Project Manager to visit our home. This is out of pocket for us, and we were told that we will receive a price on-site - we've had other contractors out which took days upon days to even get us a quote so this was a huge relief. We haven't gotten into the project side of things yet, but I wanted to show credit where credit is due, awesome customer experience. Looking forward to the rest of the project with PureDry!Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.Urmila Kumari2024-08-05Heath and Jake helped us with water leak restoration in our home. Their involvement made the process hands of the wheel for me.Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.Jim Keller2024-07-31PureDry did a great job mitigating our water leak and then did an excellent job restoring the damaged areas. We also contracted with them to have additional painting done since the rooms were empty and the house now looks great. They did their work on time, stayed within the original quote, communicated well, and it all went well.Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.Alice Isackson2024-07-19We can't say enough about PureDry! Thanks PureDry!Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.Victoria Braun2024-07-19Initially, I thought this whole water restoration bit was a scam… I had a leak in my kitchen drain pipe and had a plumber come out to fix it. Roto Rooter was the original company and had sent out a water restoration person from their company to assess the damage. He blew out or proportion, was super aggressive and made me uncomfortable so I didn’t really know what to do. I found Puredry through Google and looked at their reviews and so I gave them a call. From the initial phone call, I could tell they were way better than what I had experienced. Jake, Heath & Conner were great! I worked with them all at different stages. Conner came out and assessed the water damage, was realistic and helped me through the claim process. Once the team came out, Heath and Jake, they started restoration but felt the issue had dried up so there wasn’t a need to pull everything up etc and said they wouldn’t charge me. I really appreciated their help through this process as it’s been a stressful few weeks made better by their team…and I get my kitchen back way sooner than I thought! :)Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.Cora Lawson2024-07-18Matthew and Miguel did an amazing job in my basement. They were very professional and polite. They walked into quite a mess and seemed to know exactly what to do! Thank you so much!
