Water Removal From Basement

Sump Pump in Basement

A sump pump is a device that moves water from your basement to the outside of your house. The sump is a naturally constructed pit, usually a hole carved below the main surface of your basement floor.  This pit holds the sump pump. The pump is equipped with valves that can sense rising water levels or pressure. If the water gets too high, the sump pump will automatically push excess water out of the basement and away from the property.

If the sump pump malfunctions for any reason, then your basement is vulnerable to flooding. Without this water removal pump, other methods will need to be used to remove water from your basement to avoid water damage.

Sump Pump Outside of House

Removing Water From Basement

If the amount of water in your basement is minimal, you can use a variety of ways to get your property dry again, other than the water pump for your basement.

Mop

If there is only a small area covered in water in your basement, then a standard household mop will typically be able to take care of the issue. Use a bucket and begin to sop up the water, dumping the buckets outside, away from your home.

If the water is a little deeper, you can scoop out the water with a bucket before you start mopping.

Hand Pump

For larger amounts of water, you can try using a hand pump to remove the water from your basement. It doesn’t require any electricity and can utilize the sump pump hold to be directly plugged into your unit. A garden hose will then need to be threaded onto the other end so that the water can be sent from your basement to your yard.

Wet/Dry Vacuum

If you still have electricity in your home, you can use a wet/dry vacuum to remove any water from your basement. Just plug in the vacuum and start sucking up the water as you go.

Generator

If the reason your sump pump isn’t working is because of a lack of electricity, then a generator can save the day. The generator can be used to power the sump pump and start the draining process. Additionally, it can power a dry/wet vacuum until professionals arrive to assist.

If the water can’t be removed through these means, then it’s best to call in the professionals to ensure a thorough restoration process. If water is left behind, it can cause damage to your house and trigger the growth of potentially hazardous mold
