The following are some tips for home and business owners on how to handle water damage emergency in Snohomish County and King County:

What to do during Flooding Emergency:

* If the flood is due to a burst pipe, then stop the water flow by shutting off your main water line

* If your house is flooded, it is advisable to turn off both gas and electricity. Do not handle any electrical appliances without proper insulation.

* Find and remove your most valuable items from the affected area, like heirlooms, jewelry, money etc. Don’t spend a lot of time cleaning individual items while your house is still flooded.

* The longer the house is flooded, the more the damage caused. So pump out the standing water. Make sure you wear rubber boots and gloves while at it.

* Clean up the debris and be careful as the flood water may leave behind nails, toxins and other harmful materials.

* Allow electrical appliances to dry before using them.

* Call a water damage pro ASAP if you realize the project is too big to handle safely.

Remove Unhealthy Mold:

* Detect the mold and mildew.  Mold may grow in crawlspaces, rafters, air ducts and between walls.

* Dry out the wet or moldy area quickly to prevent the spreading of the mold. Open the windows and remove any wet item from the affected area, including carpets, furniture, toys, etc.

* If the walls or ceilings have been damaged by the water, remove all wet materials, including insulation, wooden products, and any other porous items.

* If the mold growth is considerably large, then seek the services of professional cleaners.

* Clean hard materials such as plastic, metal, solid wood and glass by washing first with hot water and non-ammonia soap. Clean rough surfaces like concrete using a stiff brush. After cleaning, disinfect all surfaces with a 10 percent bleach solution.

* Clean porous materials such as upholstered furniture, bedding, rugs, clothing, carpets, and books. Disinfect them with a pine-oil cleaner before allowing them to dry completely.

Water Damage Prevention:

* Replace the building materials in the potentially affected areas with water-resistant ones such as tile, stone, sealed concrete and waterproof wallboard.

* Check for cracks and leaks around the doors and windows, and seal them. Replace loose shingles and seal areas around the vents and chimney.

* Fix any leaking pipes and faulty drainage systems.

* Use drain snake to unclog drainage, and do not pour grease down your sink.

* Ensure that gutters and drainage pipes take water away from your house. If your gutters overflow after about 20 minutes of heavy rain, it would be appropriate to install more downspouts to ease the flow.

* Clean gutters to enhance smooth drainage.

* Ensure that the ground around your house slopes away from it to keep water away from the foundation and basement.
